This book is actually a classic that has been brought back into print in a 50th anniversary Hardcover Edition. I can see why this book is a classic - it is a really cute story. I have actually never heard the story before so it was all new to me. It was also winner of the Boys Club Of America Junior Book Award in 1968.
The illustrations are quite basic like pencil drawings, no color, but very effective for the story. The hardcover is just lovely - though I'm partial to hardcover books over paper backs.
It is a story of a little beaver who tells his family that he doesn't want to be a beaver, he wants to be a tramp. Since all beaver boys seem to go through this stage, his family indulge him and let him go off to experience being a tramp and sleeping outside. As it turns out he couldn't resist his beaver instincts to build a beautiful dam while he was out 'tramping', to his family's delight.
