Review of 'Colored Pencil Painting Portraits' by Alyona Nickelsen

Wow! You have to check out the portrait on the cover of this book! This is amazing art totally equal to oil paintings in so many ways. I am still blown away that this type of effect can be created with colored pencils!

This book is so thorough and well laid out. Alyona gives you all the information you need, details supplies and why she chooses one thing over another.  She outlines how to create certain effects to get these portraits so close to life.  In particular I love how she has included many photographs to illustrate. For example if there is an effect she is describing - she will show you how it looks before and after.

As a portrait artist myself - having never really delved into colored pencils - I am now very interested to have a go using the techniques and supplies she suggests.  And as she states, colored pencils are more durable in many ways than other formats which can crack or yellow over time.

Alyona discusses lighting and subject photography, rendering eyes, hair, noses, ears,  She provides tips and insights into things that she has discovered as she has progressed more into this art also.

I am in love with this book! If you love art, or specifically life like portraits, if you love trying new things - this book is a must.  Without the huge set up costs of paints etc, colored pencil artwork to this kind of degree is finding it's place in today's art world.

I would definitely recommend this book!

Please note that I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my review, however all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
