Review of Spiritual Discipleship by J.Oswald Sanders

I was surprised to discover that J.Oswald Sanders (1902-1992) was a kiwi from New Zealand  (like myself).  I had never heard of him before picking up this book and yet I am well familiar with the Bible College he used to teach at in NZ.  He has also written  over 40 books.

Considering this book is well over 20 years old, it still has a contemporary feel about it in the style of writing.  Oswald presents some convicting thoughts on what true Biblical discipleship looks like, and how it is nothing like most Christians think it is today.  He starts looking at the Beautitudes, breaking them into qualities:
Four passive personal qualities: Poor in Spirit, Those who Mourn, The Meek, Hunger and Thirst for righteousness
Four active social qualities: Merciful, Pure in Heart, Peacemakers, Persecution.

Some interesting comments on persecution: 'Suffering is the authentic hallmark of Christianity'p17. Now that isn't easy to hear.  He also discusses how not all persecution is blessed as sometimes it is brought on ourselves from unwise or unchristian choices.

He concludes at the end of each chapter some thoughts for reflection also.

He goes into Conditions of Discipleship where he Luke 14v27  'Anyone who does not pick up his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple'. Then v 33 'anyone who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple'. He talks of putting Jesus before everything.

I will include a photo below of the contents of this book which follow along delving into different aspects of Biblical Discipleship.  This book contains hard hitting Biblical truth that is rarely spoken of in today's world of comfort.  I like how he has organized it, the book on the whole is easy to read and well-written.

This is valuable book for today's Christian who is really serious about following God and being willing to follow the commands of Jesus.  This book is a gentle reminder about the Biblical expectations of discipleship.  In those alone lie the blessings of God for us.  God's way is always opposite to the world's.

I recommend this book.  I love having fresh insight on the scriptures, and appreciate the call to return to holiness, that always comes through when you delve into the word of God.
