Review of 'Little Critter Little Blessings Collection' by Mercer Meyer

This book is a collection of four Lil Critter stories: You Go First, It's True!, Being Thankful, We all need forgiveness.

'You Go First' is about Lil Critter always wanting to be first in everything until he goes first into the woods and encounters a snake which changes his perspective about always being first and instead choosing to prefer others.  This is a common theme for little kids, wanting to go first and while I'm not completely sure about the resolution - it still takes you to the fact that God wants us to care for and let others go first too.

'It's True!' Is about Lil Critter telling half truths and how it gets him into trouble and he learns to always tell the whole truth.  This story works well and another relevant story for little ones.

'Being Thankful' is a story of Lil Critter comparing to others and wishing he had better and bigger things than he had. His grandparents give him a thankful rock, which reminds him to be thankful for the things he does have. That seemed to work for him and then for his sister.

'We All Need Forgiveness' is a series of events again, of Lil Critter needing forgiveness or choosing not to forgive.  Until he ruined the class set for the play and everyone was mad at him, then he realized the power of forgiveness.

All of the stories link back to the Bible and how each of these qualities is important in God's eyes too.   They are all written as series of events according to the theme, so each spread will have a different occurrence type thing.  It's ok.  I read the four all at once and that pattern got a little tedious for me, but my four year old didn't seem to mind. He said he liked them.

They are very simple and easy for little kids to understand and relate to.  My son liked looking for the spider and frog that follow Lil Critter around in the different illustrations too.   So on the whole I'd say these are good stories with good messages that kids enjoy.  I would recommend.

Please note that I was sent a copy of this book for purposes of review, however all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
